The List

American, Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Brown, Bucknell, Carleton, Clark, Colorado, Emory, Franklin & Marshall, Georgetown, Hamilton, Harvard, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Macalester, Middlebury, Princeton, Swarthmore, Tufts, Tulane, Union, University of Chicago, University of Miami, University of Richmond, University of Rochester, Vassar, Washington, Wesleyan, Williams, and Yale.

That’s the list. Certainly we can, and will, pare it down, and could also add to it but it’s a starting point. Stay tuned as College Tour III: The Final Countdown continues to unfold.

  1. Dude, the Rolling Stones don’t play as many tour dates as that.

Another friend has a stepson who is applying to colleges right now, and he, too, has maybe 8-10 on his list that he has actually applied to. Not like the Good Old Day When We Were Lads, where you might apply to 2 or 3, one of which was a “safety”.

    • I know. Crazy, isn’t it? The Internet seems to have made this process both easier and harder. For me the college search was visiting the guidance office – and not getting a lot of guidance. In the end I think I only applied to two and was accepted by UMO (but then, they took just about everyone who applied) and essentially wait-listed by the Coast Guard Academy.

Having college and university web sites only a click away is nice but it can quickly lead to information overload. It’s possible we may visit as many as half the schools on the list, but only because so many are in the Northeast, and I can’t imagine her applying to more than six or eight.

Still, it’s a great experience and I’d be lying if I said I weren’t a little sad that I probably won’t get to do it again, though I expect to be spending time on college campuses for a few years yet.
